Company of Heroes in an epic World-War 2 RTS by the same company that developed games such as Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War and Homeworld. The game features a lengthy singleplayer campaign, that puts players in command of either the Able Company or Fox Company, during the Battle of Normandy and the Allied capture of France.
The approach to gameplay is more realistic then what you see in other RTS games. Units like Machine guns have to be deployed before then fire, tanks have weaker armour on their side and back, and units can use the environment to take cover or blow up the enemy.
Instead of the traditional resource gathering principles, Company of Heroes is built around capturing control points. Players collect three resources: fuel, munitions, and manpower - which can only be gained by capturing the control points for these resources.
The game offers both a traditional “deathmatch” and “Victory Point Control”. The latter revolves around holding victory points on the map. If more then half the VP’s are captured by one side, the other will start to lose Victory Points. The winner in VP matches is determined by whomever wipes out the enemy first, or when one players’ VP count reaches zero.
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts is a stand-alone expansion to Company of Heroes. This means that players do not require the original game to play Opposing Fronts - they can, however, only play the factions and units featured in Opposing Fronts and not the factions featured in Company of Heroes.
The expansion introduces two new factions to the game: The British 2nd Army, and the Panzer Elite. Each of these factions has their own singleplayer campaign.
The British are a very defensive force. Unlike other factions, the British do not build their bases on the map itself, but call in special trucks, which can then be deployed as a mobile factory to produce units. The Panzer Elite have a strong focus on vehicles, and boast some of the strongest tanks featured in the game. This does, however come at the cost of higher unit prices. Their tech tree also differs from that of the traditional armies featured in the game.
